Surae Chinn of Utah’s ABC4 Shares ADHD Diagnosis Story

Surae Chinn, the TV host of ABC4’s lifestyle show Good Things Utah, recently opened up about her late ADHD diagnosis, a discovery that has profoundly impacted her life and perspective. Earlier this year, after her 12-year-old son was diagnosed with ADHD, Surae began noticing similar patterns and behaviors in herself. This realization led her to pursue her own evaluation, revealing that she too had been living with ADHD.

Reflecting on this experience, Surae shared, “I’m going to be vulnerable right now. I think it’s important for me to share my story because people may learn something from my journey. I hope it leads to more understanding of neurodivergence. All I know is that it wasn’t in my orbit until recently.” Her words resonate with many adults, especially women, who are increasingly receiving late ADHD diagnoses, as they piece together symptoms that have often been overlooked or misunderstood.

Being in the beginning stages of understanding her ADHD journey, Surae now realizes that she’s likely been managing symptoms her entire life. This awakening isn’t uncommon, as many women are discovering ADHD later in life, often after a family member receives a diagnosis. Surae started connecting with other women and mothers who, like her, were diagnosed in adulthood. These interactions deepened her awareness of how widespread late ADHD diagnoses are among women, an issue that is only now gaining more visibility in the media and mental health circles.

“I’m learning to manage, alongside my son, and giving myself the same grace and compassion that I give him every day,” says Surae. As she connected with other women who share a similar experience, Surae felt an inner pull to share her personal story on a larger scale. “Then I said to myself, it has to be more. I have a platform to reach other people and I want others to learn something. I knew this was bigger than me,” she explained. This desire to create a space for understanding ADHD in women sparked the idea of a special edition episode on Good Things Utah, which she titled GTU: A Guide Spotlighting ADHD in Women and Beyond.

Surae described her goal for the program, saying, “I wanted to create an hour of power. I wanted it to be insightful, beautiful, helpful and powerful…and it was.” This special episode aimed not only to inform but to create a supportive environment for women navigating their own ADHD journeys, encouraging them to embrace themselves and seek the help they may need.

The entire special, linked here, captures Surae’s commitment to advocacy and education on ADHD in women. The program is segmented with commercial breaks, which may have periods of silence between each part. We encourage viewers to watch, reflect, and share any feedback they may have on this impactful episode.

As stories like Surae’s continue to surface, the conversation around ADHD in adults, and particularly late ADHD diagnosis in women, is expanding, promoting greater awareness and understanding of the unique ways neurodivergence can manifest and impact lives.
