Jeff Wilson is a dedicated father to his 7-year-old son, John, who is on the autism spectrum. Until recently, John was largely non-verbal, which posed challenges in communication. However, that changed dramatically when he began learning sign language.
“When John started learning sign language, he took off with it and started teaching himself with his tablet and so he knows over 700 signs or words,” Jeff said. This breakthrough has not only improved John’s ability to express himself but has also opened new avenues for interaction between him and his family.
Inspired by his son’s journey, Jeff, who works for Gold Cross Ambulance, began to think about how first responders could improve their communication with autistic patients. This led him to the innovative idea of creating autism kits specifically designed for emergency situations. The goal of these kits is simple yet powerful: to provide better care for autistic patients during moments when clear communication is crucial.
So, what exactly is included in an autism kit? The contents are thoughtfully curated to facilitate understanding and communication. Each kit features a sign board that allows patients to point to symbols and photos, enabling them to articulate their symptoms and express how they are feeling. In addition, a transport board is included, which outlines in simple terms where the patient is going and why. To further enhance comfort, the kit also contains a pair of headphones.
Jeff shared how these headphones play a vital role in John’s communication. “John uses them to let us know he needs a time out, he’s overwhelmed, he’s exhausted, and that he needs to be by himself so when he puts those headphones on, he’s telling us to back off.” This simple yet effective tool helps John communicate his needs in a way that is understandable to those around him, reducing stress for both him and his caregivers.
Recognizing the importance of this initiative, Jared Wright, who oversees Emergency Medical Services for Children within the Department of Public Safety, collaborated with Jeff to roll out this program for first responders. Wright expressed his support for Jeff’s vision, stating, “He came to me, and we had the program funds available. I said ‘go’ and he just ran with it and honestly, we just support him, and he does all the rest.” Their partnership has the potential to significantly impact how first responders interact with autistic individuals, enhancing their ability to provide better care.
Despite the progress made, Jeff has identified a pressing need for additional autism kits to ensure that more first responders are equipped to assist autistic patients effectively. Recognizing this urgent requirement, Liv Gilbert, a representative from Mountain America Credit Union, stepped in to offer her support.
With a heartfelt connection to the cause, Liv has an 8-year-old brother, Asher, who is also on the autism spectrum. “It’s so great, I heard about his program yesterday and my boss called and asked me to do this, and I almost started crying,” Gilbert said. “I thought this is so great, this is so amazing.” With her enthusiasm, she presented Jeff with a generous donation of $500 to help fund the production of more autism kits.
Mountain America Credit Union’s contribution is not just a monetary donation; it symbolizes a community coming together to ensure that individuals like John receive the care and understanding they deserve. By helping to expand the availability of these essential kits, they are playing a crucial role in fostering better communication and, ultimately, better care for autistic patients during emergency situations. With each kit distributed, more first responders will be prepared to meet the unique needs of those on the autism spectrum, paving the way for a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
