Utah lags behind the national average when it comes to the early identification of autism in children. This discrepancy has raised concerns among educators, healthcare professionals, and families, as early intervention is known to play a critical role in improving outcomes for children on the autism spectrum.
In an effort to improve the state’s standing, the Institute for Disability, Research, Policy and Practice at Utah State University is stepping in to offer free, remote early identification of autism training for Utah service providers. This initiative aims to equip professionals across the state with the knowledge and tools they need to identify autism early, ensuring that children receive the services they need to thrive.
Janel Preston, a special educator at the university, emphasized the importance of early identification. She explained that when early identification is missed, children and families are not receiving critical services that could significantly enhance their overall quality of life. “It is really important for providers, as well as just the general public, to have a better understanding of what autism is,” Preston urged. “And how we can help support and increase that awareness, acceptance.”
According to data from 2020, only 10 Utah children per 1,000 were identified to have autism by age 4. In contrast, the national average is more than 20 per 1,000. This gap highlights the need for more effective strategies and resources to support early identification efforts. Preston pointed out that the Autism ECHO sessions, which will start on Sept. 25, aim to bridge this gap by providing educators, service providers, case managers, administrators, and families with essential tools and knowledge to improve identification rates.
Despite the urgency of the situation, Preston acknowledged that it is difficult to pinpoint exactly why Utah falls behind in the early identification of autism. She suspects that access to resources may be a significant factor. “If you live along the Wasatch Front you have access to a lot of things,” Preston explained. “But coming maybe from San Juan County, that is a long drive into the Wasatch Front, which requires families to take time off from work, and if you have a child that is not able to make transitions very easily, that can then cause a ripple effect.” In rural areas, such as parts of Utah, families often face challenges that urban areas do not, making it harder for them to access timely and accurate diagnoses.
Preston also emphasized the long-term effects of delayed diagnosis. Children who go years without being diagnosed may face significant challenges later in life, including difficulties in social interactions, managing schoolwork, and eventually finding and keeping a job. Without the proper support, these children may struggle to reach their full potential.
Through this new training program, Preston hopes to create a greater sense of community and connection for all Utahns. By providing professionals and families with the tools they need, she believes the state can make a significant step toward closing the autism identification gap.
“I could say, ‘Hey, I have this kid or this family, this is what is going on, what are some things that I could do? What are some resources that I might not be aware of?'” Preston emphasized. The goal is to empower individuals to work together, share knowledge, and provide more effective support to children with autism, helping them lead fulfilling lives.
By focusing on the early identification of autism, Utah has an opportunity to significantly improve the outcomes for children on the spectrum. With better awareness, access to services, and professional development, the state can work toward narrowing the gap and ensuring that every child receives the support they deserve from an early age.
