Temple Grandin Speaks at Colorado Mesa University

Colorado Mesa University’s Civic Forum is honored to present Temple Grandin, PhD, for a special event in the University Center Meyer Ballroom on March 5. As a world-renowned professor, author, and advocate, Dr. Grandin has left an indelible mark on both the livestock industry and the autism community. Her work has revolutionized livestock handling practices, making them more humane, while also raising awareness and understanding of autism.

A professor at Colorado State University in the College of Agriculture Sciences, Dr. Grandin is widely recognized for her expertise in animal behavior and her ability to bridge the gap between science and real-world application. Despite facing significant challenges as a child due to autism, she excelled academically, particularly in science and engineering. Her innovative approaches to humane livestock handling have transformed industry standards, making processing facilities safer and less stressful for animals. Because of her groundbreaking work, she has received international recognition and continues to be a sought-after speaker and advocate for both autism awareness and ethical livestock treatment.

During her visit to Colorado Mesa University, Dr. Grandin will spend time with CMU Tech veterinary technology and agriculture science students, sharing her vast knowledge and experiences. Later in the day, she will deliver two compelling public lectures, both held in the Meyer Ballroom. These lectures are free and open to the public with a ticket, and donations will be accepted to support CMU Tech students.

For those interested in attending, free tickets are available at CMUstages.com. Below are details about the two presentations:

The Importance of Good Stockmanship • 4pm

“The Importance of Good Stockmanship” will focus on the essential principles of livestock handling, with a particular emphasis on cattle. It will explore key behaviors and techniques that every good stockperson should understand, such as using the flight zone and point of balance to guide animals calmly and efficiently. The talk will also highlight the importance of minimizing visual distractions in handling facilities, like shadows, dangling chains, or moving people, to ensure smooth animal movement through chutes.

5pm Intermission

Attendees will have a break between sessions, allowing time for discussion and reflection on the insights shared during the first presentation.

My Experience with Autism • 5:30pm

“My Experience with Autism” will explore Temple Grandin’s childhood and early years, highlighting the challenges and successes she faced in her personal and professional development. She will share how mentors, such as her mother, teachers, and peers, played a key role in her growth and provide valuable insights into how individuals with autism experience the world. With a focus on sensory processing and “seeing in pictures,” Grandin will discuss how these unique perspectives contribute to problem-solving and collaboration of the minds.

This event is a rare opportunity to hear from one of the most influential voices in both agriculture and autism advocacy. Whether you are passionate about livestock management, neurodiversity, or simply want to learn from an inspiring leader, Dr. Grandin’s lectures promise to be insightful and thought-provoking.
